The key frame of reference here is the 'escaped from Hungary' part of the brief biography provided.

How many Americans know WHY he had to escape from Hungary in 1956? 

I would wager to say that the vast majority would have no idea what he was talking about. Even recent history, i.e. only 55 years ago, is unknown to the majority of American citizens.

History tends to repeat itself - same basic events, over and over, different actors/states, same basic scenarios.

Those who do not know history tend to repeat it.
