School Buses - Time for Change
The ubiquitous yellow school bus, so familiar a symbol of public education in the United States, is an example of government waste. Still produced basically the same way, still frequently lacking seat belts, and useful only for school transportation (and the occasional school trips). Otherwise this vast fleet of vehicles requiring maintenance, storage, inspections, etc....sit idle on weekends, holidays, summer breaks, etc...
This is not a good use of limited taxpayer dollars, both state & local resources.
It is time to start using standard commercial buses for school transportation. These buses can be cost effectively leased from private companies with capital & maintenance costs reduced for taxpayers because the private companies can utilize these buses for commercial charters and transportation on weekends, holidays, and summer breaks.
Commercial buses will take departments and boards of education throughout the nation out of the fleet operations business and allow them to focus on the business of providing quality education at afforable prices (for taxpayers).
