Windmills & Wind Turbine Energy
A debate is raging among environmentalists, capitalists, and people who don't want their million dollar view of the ocean from their sea-side mansions ruined. It is great that in America we have the ability to voice our views, whether they be from practical, economical, environmental, altruistic, or egocentric perspectives.
In the end the question still remains the same - Are we going to continue to rely on fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) to power not only our economy but our advanced civilization?
The answer from various perspective, but particularly from a national security perspective should be NO.
Dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuel (oil) already impacts the American economy in a major way. We saw the result of oil shortages from a natural disaster, Hurricane Katrina, on the price of oil in the northeast United States. Prices went up, business and personal costs went up, resulting in less money for people and businesses to spend on consumption of other goods or investment.
We rely on foreign oil, from Central and South America (we can call this 'local' oil), as well as from Africa and the Middle East (we can call this 'more foreign' oil). Obtaining oil from unstable regions in Africa and the Middle East puts us at risk for a sudden cut off in oil supplies. Those of you who are old enough (including me) will remember the 1973 Oil Embargo when OPEC raised prices and we all stood in lines for a ration of gasoline. How quickly America forgets that this is more than just gas prices, but the strength and survival of our nation and its' economy that are at stake.
Wind generated energy, once the towers and transmission lines are put in place, is essentially free and continuous. Other than maintenance and upgrades, there is no reliance on foreign suppliers, pipelines, oil tankers, ocean weather, security, refining capability, and more pipelines & tanker trucks to obtain electrical energy. Investing only a fraction of the money spent on oil drilling and exploration as well as utilization, wind energy can become a significant source of electrical energy for the United States, reducing our reliance of foreign oil and foreign politics. It will never supply all our energy needs, but it can supply a significant 'environmentally clean' fraction of our society with naturally sustainable energy supplies. Simultaneously, investment in wind energy related businesses stimulates manufacturing and high tech employment in the United States.
Put your personal differences and self serving opinions aside and support the security of America by working toward its energy independence.
